Background

Every investigator on this study has revised for a medical exam with a conventional question bank: a scrolling list, a percentage score, and a slowly flattening will to live. The questions were rarely the problem. The questions were often excellent. The problem was that answering them felt like an obligation you served rather than a thing you did, and revision you dread gets postponed, crammed, and forgotten by the weekend.

Hypothesis

Revision you look forward to produces recall that lasts. Not because enjoyment is magic, but because of what it makes you do: come back. Active recall — retrieving an answer from memory rather than re-reading it — is the best-evidenced study technique there is, and it works in proportion to how often you actually practise it. A question bank you open voluntarily, on a Tuesday, without a study schedule making you, delivers more retrieval per week than a superior one you avoid. Playcebo is that hypothesis, built.

The compound

Underneath, Playcebo is a serious question bank: thousands of questions written to medical school and postgraduate exam standards, across specialties — anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and the rest — each reviewed before it reaches you, with explanations that tell you why the right answer is right. The delivery mechanism, which is the part that makes it Playcebo, remains blinded until launch. Participants will be unblinded when the beta trial commences in September 2026.

Declarations of interest

The investigators intend to use the product themselves. This is generally considered a good sign. No pharmaceutical funding was received; no pharmaceutical benefit is claimed. Playcebo contains no active ingredient — just active recall.
